MARIBO CULTURAL AXIS

As part of the renewal efforts in Maribo, Kragh&Berglund have developed a proposal that connects the town and supports the initiative more broadly. We developed a “cultural axis” that made the road between the station and Maribo Cathedral more visible. Our vision was to create an unusual path and physical surroundings that reflect the local identity, stage the historical squares in the area, and turns it into an attractive town for locals and visitors alike.

In order to create a strong link between the station and the church, the cultural axis has been given a robust surface as well as playful futuristic lighting, which provides a contrast to the urban space. Inventory such as sculptural furniture that can be used for rest, exercise, or as a stage, will help attract children and young people. Next to the old town hall, a play sculpture with mirrors to help activate the square next to the old town hall. The area surrounding the sculpture is fill of hills with artificial grass and effect lighting in the pavement.

AN ATTRACTIVE CITY TO VISIT & LIVE

Throughout the cultural axis, clearly marked transition points are established as hinges” that improve the flow of pedestrians across the traffic and consist either of a raised surface with cobblestones or a local narrowing of the road. Three new large flower beds help shield the urban life taking place in the square from the many cars surrounding it, while simultaneously supporting the trees in the area. The existing wall between Jernbanegården and Qvades gård is partially preserved and turned into a green wall.
