In collaboration with Elding Oscarson, UrbanWorks and DIFK, Kragh&Berglund participated in a competition, designing a new central station and surrounding urban space in Norrköping, Sweden. The project focused on creating an iconic station and optimizing and supplementing the city’s existing structures with green and blue connections.
Lifting the railway onto a bridge transforms the physical barrier in the city into a visual experience.

Large square tiles would be established both outside and inside the station building create a cohesive space. The square provides spaces for waiting and sitting. A large reflective water basin becomes a meeting point to gather around and by.

The proposal includes a large park along Drottninggatan connecting the different parts of Norrköping. The new, green areas are rooted in the morphology of the historical city by formal promenades which gradually transition into a wilder landscape in the park to the north.
The park offers different spatial qualities and becomes a sequence of experiential opportunities including playgrounds, trimmed grass areas and the urban square.

“The new, green areas are rooted in the morphology of the historical city by formal promenades which gradually transition into a wilder landscape”

Along the railway bridge, a ‘wild-style’ promenade is being established, which will become an important part of the green, connecting network of Norrköping. The design of the promenade is flow-based and influenced by the city’s functions. Green and blue junctions connect to social functions.

The new urban environments offer a variety of public spaces and places for those who live and work in the neighbourhood or for those passing through. Places for meetings, recreation, rest and activities strengthen the district’s social sustainability and create a quarter with a sense of security.
