Kragh Berglund has designed the outdoor areas for Roskilde Technical School (RTS) in the district Musicon in Roskilde.
The design of the outdoor areas is simple and flexible uniting the entire district and creating a clear connection between the existing and new buildings.

“The promenade is elegantly resolved, and the overall design is characterized by a sensuous quality that is both raw and refined at the same time.”

The campus area consists of three prominent landscape elements: a continuous promenade; a gently undulating grass-covered terrain; and large groves of red oak (Quercus borealis).

The area in front of the existing buildings is subdivided by a campus rambla that leads to a centrally located arrival square. Along the rambla, grey poplars (Populus x canescens) have been planted, forming a light canopy of foliage.
Connected to the rambla are various ‘pockets’ featuring activities, parking, and different opportunities for gathering – both on paved surfaces and on lawns. Together, these elements form a coherent whole that can also accommodate other events and uses within the Musicon district – for example during the Roskilde Festival, where the area could serve both as storage space and as a venue for various activities.

The promenade is elegantly resolved, and the overall design is characterized by a sensuous quality that is both raw and refined at the same time. An excellent urban space has been created here — a welcoming place for people to be.
The arrival square and the common square in front of RTS are connected by a staircase with integrated seating steps, forming a social space closely linked to the building’s entrance hall and providing a gathering area for the school’s students.

Festpladsen (the festival square) is a local connection between RTS and Musicon, and it provides various activities such as a climbing sculpture and a sunken multi-purpose pitch for ball games surrounded by seating steps. In the winter, it can functions as a ice rink for the entire district and help bring life to the area even outside RTS’s ‘opening hours’.
