Kongelunden, in Århus, is undergoing a thoughtful transformation aimed at uniting nature and urban life into a cohesive, car-free space accessible to all. This ambitious project, focuses on creating an inviting and sustainable environment that benefits both visitors and local wildlife. Here’s an in-depth look at how this transformation is taking shape.
Zoning for Unity
The Forest
At the heart of Kongelunden lies the forest, which plays a crucial role in fostering a tranquil atmosphere. By working in harmony with nature, the design promotes a serene environment where both people and wildlife can thrive.
Light & Active Openings
Strategically placed open areas encourage visitors to engage with the space. These zones are designed for both relaxation and recreation, inviting individuals and families to unwind or participate in outdoor activities.
Corridors
Historically, Kongelunden featured promenades that connected urban areas. The current plan transforms traffic zones into vibrant green corridors for walking and cycling, effectively linking Kongelunden to the surrounding city. This approach not only facilitates movement but also breaks down previous barriers, democratizing access to the natural beauty of the area.
Edge Zones
These transition landscapes serve as gateways, seamlessly blending the forest with open fields. They are crafted to ensure biodiversity and are designed to thrive for generations, reinforcing the commitment to environmental sustainability.
”Now, a comprehensive development plan for the area is in place, which will future-proof Kongelunden as a modern setting for events within sports, culture and business.”

Key Routes for Connection
Marselisruten
This green route is the backbone of Kongelunden, connecting the city center of Aarhus with the Marselis Forests. More than just a pathway, it offers a cultural journey that brings urban life closer to nature.
Coastal Route
A dedicated bike and pedestrian route will link Højbjerg to the coastline, allowing travelers to traverse some of the region’s most picturesque areas. This scenic route enhances connectivity while encouraging outdoor exploration.
Kongeruten
An internal pedestrian path will weave through Kongelunden, ensuring all key destinations within the space are easily accessible. This route promotes exploration and encourages visitors to experience every corner of this vibrant environment.
Creating Landmarks
Entrance Markers
Strategic points along Kongelunden’s perimeter will feature distinctive landscape designs, welcoming visitors and highlighting the boundaries of this unified space.
Kongemærket
At the convergence of the main routes lies a new landmark—a square and pavilion designed to serve as a central gathering place. This focal point will not only facilitate orientation within Kongelunden but will also become a hub for activities and community connections.
Through its careful zoning, established routes, and iconic landmarks, Kongelunden is set to become a engaging environment for all, seamlessly blending into the surrounding Århus. This transformation invites everyone to explore its diverse landscapes while fostering a connection between park and city that makes them one.
