In 2005, Bakkegårdschool was rebuilt and expanded as a part of Gentofte Municipality’s SKUB (school development and expansion project) projects. The proposal is based on a value-based user involvement program, which SKUB has formulated in cooperation with the teachers, pupils and parents of Bakkegårdschool and in accordance with the new Folkeskole law. Kragh & Berglund has designed seven years long for SKUB.

On the roof of Bakkegårdschools sports hall, Kragh & Berglund has built a playful landscape that thematically unfolds itself as an imaginative, floating riverlandscape. The landscape is constructed with sandboxes, rubber hills, ponds, elephant grass, a labyrinth, balance pillars and oak trunks. By using the school’s roof area of 6000 m2 in an alternative way, the new school terrain becomes an exciting and distinct social space that both stimulates a variation in the children’s sensual and physical activity and makes a mass of fresh air within reach.

Utilizing the roof of the school provides a larger outdoor space for students and teachers, a room with fresh air, a break from the indoor school day.

After the refurbishment at Bakkegårdschool it has become possible to make fresh air and movement part of the school day.
The landscape is playful and exciting, where the children can explore and where there’s room for play.
