As part of a larger project to revitalize the entire Åkerbyparken, the existing playground Åkerbybäcken has been renovated. The playground also serves as an extension of Byäng School and its schoolyard, which is also undergoing a major renovation.
The design aims to enhance the existing environments; the edge of Stolpaskogen (forest) is moved southward to allow the playground to extend into the forest, and the existing ‘brook’ is redesigned to have a more playful and child-friendly appearance.
The central water play area is accessible with a path along the brook, exciting water-filled pools to run or drive through, and pumps, water channels, and workbenches at accessible heights.
Throughout the playground, modular wooden furniture winds its way. These serve multiple functions: they act as paths, balance play elements, and seating in various situations, becoming a strong feature that clearly defines and divides the park’s different spaces.
“The edge of Stolpaskogen is moved southward to allow the playground to extend into the forest, and the existing ‘brook’ is redesigned to be more playful and child-friendly.”
The project involved close collaboration with a constructor, stormwater consultant, fountain expert, and lighting consultant to find the best solutions together. The artificial brook integrates both water mist and lighting to create atmosphere.
